Clearing the Clutter
I would've had this newsletter written earlier this month but I had to clean the mountain off my desk, which lead to putting photos away, which led to bills being paid, then some phone calls & e-mails that needed to be returned, then...

OK, I'm kidding (sort of) but do you ever find yourself in this situation? Do you look at the muddle and feel overwhelmed because there's so much stuff and you don't know where to start?

Clutter is an obstacle on many levels and I believe that physical clutter creates mental clutter, obstructing the flow of our lives.

Clearing the clutter opens up space physically and energetically, creating opportunities for movement and new possibilities. It's kind of like dating someone you're not really into until someone better comes along. You fill up your life with something that seems to feel good in the short term but it's not really what you want and it gets in the way of having space for what you really want. You know what I'm talking about - it doesn't work...but dating's a whole other newsletter topic!
Getting into action
Get real about what to keep. I'm not proposing that we live a spartan lifestyle, but I believe we need to be realistic about the stuff that surrounds us. When clearing clutter, ask yourself: Do I use this? Do I need this? Do I want this? How does this thing make me feel: Happy? Safe? Frustrated? Comforted? Weighted down? Does this represent someone I used to be, someone I no longer am? Do I mind the maintenance required for this item? These questions help determine whether to keep, sell or toss.

Give yourself permission to be sad. Some things are more difficult to clear than others. When it comes to mementos and family heirlooms, you don't need to hold onto everything - just because that bowl belonged to your grandmother doesn't mean you need to keep it. Only keep items that are meaningful for you. For the rest, acknowledge your emotional attachment to the item and the memories it holds. Then perhaps you can create a little ritual to say good bye and let it go.

Clear one area at a time. This could be a counter top or an entire room, but the point is that you focus on one area and complete it before moving on. You'll see results quicker which will give you a sense of satisfaction and the motivation to keep going.
